Racism - From a childs point of view

Sunday evening as we were getting ready for bed, Megan reminded me that the following day was a holiday. She proceeded to tell me what she learned about Martin Luther King in school. It went something like this:

"Before I was born, while I was still in God's magic, Martin Luther King had a dream that everyone would be able to drink from the same water-fountain. Then some bad people came and killed him, but his dream came true. " (remember... she is only 5)

I asked her why that was important, and filled in some of the gaps explaining that there were a lot of people who thought that if you had dark skin you should not be allowed to ride the same bus, drink from the same water fountain, or go to school with people with white skin.

My sweet, brilliant little girl made me so proud with her response. "Mommy, it does not matter what color your skin is, only what is in your heart"

Apparently Eric and I are doing something right!

I have a 5 year old!!!

Yesterday Megan turned 5. She wanted a Strawberry Shortcake birthday, and a Strawberry Shortcake dress, and white cupcakes with strawberry frosting on them. So that is what she got. I searched EBay and Etsy for days looking for a Strawberry Shortcake dress. I got this one for a steal! She loves it, we had so many compliments on it, and Lauren wants a Strawberry Shortcake birthday next year so that she can wear it.
Megan milked being the "birthday girl" all day. It was "the birthday girls wants Burger King for dinner" (so we got Burger King), "the Birthday girl gets to pick out the movie" (Strawberry Shortcake of course) etc. They pretty much get to do what they want on their birthday, within reason. Bedtime was still 8pm, she still could not eat dinner in the living room while watching TV, and she still had to share with her sister. But the rest of it was all Megan.

This morning in the car I put on my lip gloss (we were still in the driveway) and Lauren asked what it was. I told her that it was lip gloss. She replied: "When I am a grown up I am going to be a Mommy and wear lip gloss." She is such a cutie!

High heels

Everyone who knows me knows that I love high heels. And like most little girls, mine love to wear my heels and pretend to be grown up. The other day Megan comes out of my bedroom wearing heels and says "Hi, I'm Kelly". Lauren walks out behind her and says "and I'm April!"

Quote from Megan...

This evening as I was tucking Megan into bed I told her that she had to stop growing and stay my little girl forever. Of course, she said "no". When I asked her why not... this is what she said:  "I can't, I have to get married!"

More cute things kids say

A couple of weeks ago Megan wanted some candy and Eric told her that she had to wait. When he was out walking the dog Megan asked Me for the candy and I told her that Daddy said she had to wait. She then said "Daddy isn't here, he will not know" and right then Eric walked in the front door. "Oops" Megan said.

(Ok, it sounds much cuter out loud)
